Secure is a home inventory program that keeps track of all items of value in the home. It provides a simple and easy way to print out information and store data that could come in handy in the event of theft, fire, flood, etc.
Secure is able to sum the values of selected items, print a portfolio of selected items, and print and store notes. All of the files created by Secure can be read by a text reader, allowing access to the files if the Secure application is damaged or missing.
To launch Secure, double click on the Secure application icon.
Note : When launching Secure, the application looks for the file called "Secure Start". If "Secure Start" cannot be found, the application brings up a dialog box asking the user to locate the file. Secure will not function correctly if the "Secure File" is not found or is damaged.
To create a home item, click on "New Item" on the main toolbar or select "New Item" from the "House Item" menu.
Type a name for the item (i.e.- Yamaha Grand Piano) and click save. Secure will then allow you to enter information on the item ╤ click "Next" to advance to the next screen. The value must be entered twice ╤ the first time, comments can be made along with the value. The second time only enter the number (this is used when totaling the value of all selected items). Entering any character other than a number in the second value screen will result in the message "Numbers can only be entered here".
After entering all of the information, Secure displays the "Object Information". All of the information entered can be viewed by clicking on the buttons labeled "Description" and "Condition...".
Suggestion For Saving Items : When saving home items, create a folder for each room in the house (i.e. ╤ Bedroom 1, etc...) and save all of the items in this room in the same folder. You can create a folder by selecting "New Folder" in the "File" menu of the Finder or click on the new folder button in the save dialog in the Secure application.
To access Secure's notebook, click on the notebook button. The notebook window will appear, and the main screen toolbar will dim. To create a new note click on "New". The date is automatically entered at the top of each notebook page. Click "Done" after typing the note and save the note. To open a note, click on "Open". Select the note and click "Open". (note: Opening a Secure item file while in the notebook will cause the notebook window to close, and the item file will be displayed in the main window.) To print a note, click on "Print".
3. A value report of all of the items printed in the portfolio
To print a report, select "Damage Report" from the "Reports" menu. Secure will first print a cover page (This cover page may take several minutes to print depending on your printer ╤ to speed the printing, change the printing settings to black and white in the print options dialog box.) After receiving the command to print, Secure displays a dialog showing the files on the hard disk. Select the item to be printed and click "Open" to print it. After clicking on print, the dialog will appear again ╤select as many files as necessary and click "Cancel" when done. The program will then display a last printing dialog box. To not print a value report, click "Cancel". Clicking "Ok" and "Print" will print a value report as the last page to the Item Portfolio.
Using the Value Report:
The Value Report displays the total value of selected items.
Select "Value Report" from the "Reports" menu. Secure pulls up a dialog showing all of the files on your disk. Select the file to be included in the report and click "Open". After a few seconds, the dialog will appear again ╤select as many files as desired and click "Cancel" to display the final total value.
1. If the program quits unexpectedly with the message:
Secure Error. Program must quit.
Solution : Assign the application more memory. This can be done through the "Get Info" command in the Finder.
2. If the program quits when it receives the command to open a home file or note, the below message is displayed:
Secure Error. Program must quit.
Solution : Secure can only open files that it has created. Opening files created by word processors or other applications will cause problems. If this file is a Secure file, it may be damaged and unreadable by the program. Drag it to a text reader like Simpletext to retrieve the information.
3. If the program quits immediately upon startup with the message:
Secure Error. Program must quit. 53 at 00021
Solution : Check to see if the "Secure Start" file is in the same folder as the application. If the "Secure Start" file is missing, obtain another from the author (see last section).
